The NBS standing exhibition &ldquo;Money in the Territory of Serbia&rdquo; (Kralja Petra 12 St., Belgrade) features the coinage used in Serbian lands &ndash; from the earliest finds until the latest issues.

The use of money in the territory of present-day Serbia dates back to ancient history. The oldest specimens date to the 6&ndash;5th centuries BC and were minted in Greek towns, testifying to contacts between the Balkan population and the developed ancient world. The subsequent issues were those of Macedonian rulers Philip II and Alexander the Great, the Adriatic towns of Apollonia and Dyrrhachium, as well as silver coins minted by the Celts, who lived in present-day Srem and Belgrade. The long-lasting and strong domination of the Roman Empire in 1-5 century AD created the conditions for the opening of two important mints of Roman coins in the territory of present-day Serbia &ndash; Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica) and Viminacium (present-day Kostolac). The name of the Serbian currency dinar originates from the name of the Roman currency denarius &ndash; dinars were first coined in medieval Serbia and later in the liberated, 19 century-Serbia. The period prior to the establishment of the independent Serbian state in the Middle Ages was marked by the use of coins struck by barbarian tribes, and later by the powerful Byzantium.
The &ldquo;Serbian dinar&rdquo; was mentioned for the first time in documents from late 1214, at the time of Stefan the First-Crowned, though the first Serbian ruler who minted own coins is considered King Radoslav (1227&ndash;1234). Until the fall of the Serbian Despotate under Ottoman rule in 1459, almost all Serbian medieval rulers minted coins near numerous silver mines such as Brskovo, Rudnik, Novo Brdo, Srebrenica, Trepča and others. The Serbian dinar was one of the most important elements of Serbian statehood and independence in the Middle Ages. The diversity and beauty of Serbian coins were particularly pronounced during the reign of Serbian King (1331&ndash;1346) and later Emperor (1346&ndash;1355) Du&scaron;an, when the scope of monetary production in Serbia surpassed that of the neighbouring countries.
From the fall of the Serbian Despotate until the mid-19th century, currencies of different countries were used in Serbian lands. During Ottoman rule, several mints of Ottoman currency operated in Novo Brdo, Kučajna and Belgrade. The para, as the currency of the Ottoman Empire, is still used as the name of the subunit of the Serbian dinar.

The National Bank of Serbia has been using state-of-the-art technology in terms of&nbsp; banknote protection against counterfeiting.
New dinar banknotes contain a combination of security features, some of which cannot be seen by the naked eye. A result of this is a series of banknotes extremely well protected against counterfeiting and, at the same time, easy to check.

Theme exhibition entitled &ldquo;Counterfeits&rdquo;, features a selection of domestic and foreign banknote originals and counterfeits. The visitors to this exhibition will be afforded an opportunity to compare the originals and the counterfeits, and to get acquainted with banknote security features in order to reduce the risk of coming into possession of counterfeits. The exhibited &ldquo;super dollar&rdquo;, a 100-dollar banknote, and the &ldquo;super euro&rdquo;, a 200-dollar banknote, indicate to what extent technological development has contributed to the upgrading of counterfeits and added to the difficulty of their being recognized as such.
The main visible security features in a banknote that people should look at are:&nbsp;the intaglio printing technique, watermark, security thread, see-through register, kinegram and colour-shifting ink feature&nbsp;.
In everyday use, when you receive a banknote, you should always check for several of the security features in order to ensure that the banknote is genuine by applying the following four tests: FEEL, LOOK and TILT.

As the manufacturing and issuing of money represents one of the important features of state sovereignty, in addition to the nominal value of money and the year of minting, elements such as the coat of arms and the appropriate emblems and inscriptions indicating the state, and the issuing bank, are also incorporated in the design of money.
Apart from its basic function as a means of payment, money has many cultural, sociological and other intrinsic values.

On the occasion of placing a new series of coins of the National Bank of Serbia in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 dinars into circulation, a new theme exhibition named &ldquo;Coin Minting &ndash; from the Conceptual Design to the Mint&ldquo; was opened on 1 July 2005. The exhibition shows the process of coin production, from coin design, semi-products and minting tools, to the process of coin minting itself.&nbsp;
The usage of coins in everyday life goes far back in history. The then established process of manufacturing has in the course of time only been perfected by applying contemporary technological achievements. Until mid-16th century coin mints in Europe represented a kind of artistic workshops where the entire manufacturing process based on the usage of few hand-made tools took place. The commencement of machine minting greatly enhanced the manufacturing process, upgrading the quality of coins, above all in respect of their appearance. This method resulted in more uniform coin features which conveyed a common message in both artistic and technical sense.
Various metal alloys whose composition is suitable for the minting process are used in minting coins. Contemporary coins intended for circulation are predominantly made of alloys comprising copper, nickel, zinc and aluminium; frequently used alloys nowadays are&nbsp;new silver and Nordic gold(the latter being used in the production of euro cent denominations).
Coinage issued by the National Bank of Serbia for the purpose of circulation in the Republic of Serbia is manufactured by the Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins &ndash; Topčider. This specialized organisation is a part of the National Bank of Serbia and has a long tradition in manufacturing coins that dates back to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia when the first facilities for manufacturing coinage were installed in 1938 and the Mint's operations began.

Exhibition of photos by Photo Club Belgrade

The exhibition of photos of Photo Club Belgrade will open on Monday, 6 October, at 7 pm, in the exhibition hall of the NBS Slavija building, Nemanjina 17.
The President of Photo Club Belgrade, Vojislav Luković (KMF FSS), said about this exhibition: &ldquo;The exhibition consists of 82 photographs by 24 contemporary authors and 65 photographs by &lsquo;old&rsquo; authors who left their mark on Serbian photography in the past. From landscapes to portraits, in the black-and-white technique of analogue photography or the colour technique of digital capture, the members of the oldest photo club in Serbia present their individual approaches.
During its 86 years of existence, spanning two centuries and several states, working quietly, from the sidelines, as an association of photography enthusiasts who do not live from photography, but live for photography &ndash; for their own robes and on their own bread &ndash; Photo Club Belgrade has nurtured many authors who have entered the history of Serbian photography. Through the joy of creation, they bear witness with their works to fleeting moments which remain recorded for eternity.&rdquo;
The exhibition will be open until 20 October, Monday to Friday, from 10 am until 6 pm.
Entrance is free.

Photo Exhibition “Sounds of Existence”

As part of the International Photography Festival Visualizator, a photo exhibition titled &ldquo;Sounds of Existence&rdquo; by Strahinja Vukić will open on Tuesday, December 2, at 7 19:00., in the exhibition space of the National Bank of Serbia at Slavija (Nemanjina 17).
Strahinja Vukić (1997, Čačak) has worked on both documentary and feature films, developing a distinctive sensibility that combines a documentary gaze with subtle emotionality. He has exhibited at several group exhibitions in Belgrade and Čačak, including the Faculty of Dramatic Arts students&rsquo; exhibition &ldquo;Identities&rdquo; at the Student Cultural Center.
In the series &ldquo;Sounds of Existence&rdquo;, he presents visual records that are simultaneously simple and intense, where objects take on the character of portraits, and spaces become carriers of intimate traces of everyday life. Vukić&rsquo;s work is both documentary and personal, and his visual language is rooted in precise observation, spontaneity, and atmosphere.
The thirteenth edition of the Visualizator festival, held under the slogan &ldquo;Be Present,&rdquo; takes place from November 18 to December 15, 2025, in several cities across Serbia. Visitors can expect more than ten exhibitions by authors from seven countries, as well as workshops, panel discussions, and more. The festival is supported by the OSCE Mission to Serbia, the embassies of Italy, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Norway, and Portugal, the Tourist Organization of Belgrade, Alma Quattro, Info Media Group, and NS Plakat.
The exhibition at the National Bank of Serbia will be open to visitors until December 10, on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 18:00.
