Exhibition “Modernism in Belgrade – Architectural Heritage in the Capital”

On 10 September, at the NBS Exhibition Hall in Slavija Square, an exhibition themed “Modernism in Belgrade – Architectural Heritage in the Capital” was opened as part of the European Heritage Days.

The exhibition was authored by expert associates from the Belgrade City Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, and includes all buildings in the modernist tradition located in the territory of the Serbian capital. The large number of edifices shows that on the one hand, Modernism in Belgrade kept up with the artistic trends in major European centres, and on the other, that the works of its key representatives – Milan Zloković, Branislav Kojić, Dušan Babić, Jan Dubov, Nikola Dobrović, Dragiša Brašovan and others – brought unique and authentic architectural examples to Serbia, which even now, more than eight decades later, are still recognised as an indispensable part of the national architectural heritage.

Several institutions of the City of Belgrade and the Republic of Serbia joined in to bring this exhibition to life: Secretariat for Culture, Secretariat for Economy, Parobrod Cultural Institution, National Bank of Serbia, Belgrade Museum of Science and Technology, Aeronautical Museum – Belgrade, Belgrade Observatory, Filmske Novosti, Archives of Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav Film Archive. On this occasion, the Belgrade City Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments established cooperation with the relevant heirs, copyright holders, foundations, the civil sector and private collectors, and most notably with the Milan Zloković Foundation, which is actively involved in attempts to preserve the works of this renowned architect and the founder of Modernism.

The exhibition was opened by Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić, Assistant Minister of Culture and Information Danijela Vanušić, dr Ljiljana Blagojević, architect and exhibition consultant, and Olivera Vučković, Acting Director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. A string orchestra and soloists from the Stanković School of Music performed at the opening ceremony.
The exhibition was open to the public until 1 October.
